Do you have missing teeth?
Perhaps you smile with your hands over your mouth?
You may even find that food gets caught in the gaps between your teeth?
There are a few solutions to the problems that missing teeth create, one could consider dentures or even a dental bridge. Dentures are removable and so many patients are not particularly keen on this option for replacing missing teeth, and whilst dental bridges are a permanent solution, they involve reduction of the adjacent teeth to support the new bridge-and as such are a less conservative option.
Dental implants are often considered one of the best solutions to missing teeth, as they simply replace the old tooth root and have a new dental crown on top, the result of this is that you will not notice that you have a dental implant, and neither will anyone else.
How long do dental implants take?
From the time that you do decide that you want to replace a missing tooth with dental implants it will normally be somewhere between four and six months before your final restoration is in place. The dental implant procedure involves some very minor surgery, and it takes time for this surgery to totally healed before we can restore your smile to its former glory.
How many dental implants do I need?
This is a great question, and it really does vary on your precise circumstances, however the following is a rough guide.
- If you have one missing tooth then this will be replaced with one dental implant.
- If you have two missing teeth then we may easily use one or two dental implants.
- For three or four missing teeth we will normally use to dental implants, one at each end of the gap.
- For five or six missing teeth things get a little more complicated, however we would normally use anywhere from 2 to 4 dental implants.
- For a full jaw of missing teeth, we would normally use anything upwards from four dental implants.
In some instances it is possible to replace a full jaw of missing teeth with only two dental implants, if we do guess this would be with a removable denture which clips over the top of these two implants. This is a more cost effective option for many people and is effective as it is possible to utilise your existing denture, thereby keeping the cost much lower.
