Back in 1999, I had a hunch that the boarded up shops in Forest Road East Horsley could become my dream venue for a special way of delivering whole body dental care.
The huge building was a short walk from my home at the time and Effingham Junction train station as well as near the A3 and M25 roads. It also had the potential for at least 18 car park spaces and I had heard back then that car parking was one of the most important criteria for people seeking a dental practice. This gave me the courage to consider a sleepy, leafy village location, that would reflect the values of myself and future centre of excellence. To be relaxed, peaceful, clutter-free and spacious. To move away from the tight space, stress and pollution of the busy high street and have a Shangri-La for patients to have the perfect environment to receive unrushed oral and whole body health assessments and make informed choices for their care and well-being.
Also back then, I was in high demand to speak on BBC radio and go on national TV with my regular slot on CH5 breakfast show called Espresso as well as featured on London Tonight with Phil Bayles on lTV. This media awareness, plus my connections with numerous leading Environmental Doctors and Toxicologists, body-workers in the fields of Physiotherapy, Osteopathy, Chiropractic and Cranial Therapy, Psychologists and Mental-health Therapists and General Health & Well-Being Therapists, helped me attract a large patient base whilst I was working as an associate for a clinic in Teddington.
This all gave me the confidence to follow my heart and take huge personal financial risk and invest in transforming the derelict shops into Mortiboys Dental Spa. I was personally going to Yoga and Alexander technique classes to help with my back and postural issues and I thought it would be great to be able to receive personal care from my own clinic.
The first ten years we worked from the downstairs space and thankfully five years ago we managed to develop some of the upstairs space to give more room and space to deliver our health services.
So here we are, now fifteen years, since opening in May 2000 with a solid reputation for outstanding dental care. So many people have had their lives transformed by being able to find an experienced team who are committed to helping them overcome their fears of dentists and receive amazing dental care in a safe, calm and delightful environment.
Our ethos is becoming more expected within our profession in general and hopefully our centre will inspire other dentists to take dentistry to this next level.
